Peace Garden drawing

A class of year 7 students today visited the Sophia Peace garden located at the Cabra Dominican Sisters Sophia Centre. This is a special garden as it commemorates those sisters that have passed and provides a peaceful environment for women who seek help at the Sophia centre. Students were encouraged to draw plants from this garden, which they will later create etchings of. Students also created diary entries of their experience:

“I loved it in the garden, it felt like I was in a magical world”. Lorena

“Drawing in Sophia Gardens was peaceful and it made me think and collect my thoughts about drawing this picture”. Alexia

A new species of Insect

Year 7 students this term have worked hard to create new species of insects. They abstracted their own insect drawings and layered multiple body components on separated plastic sheets. These sculptures were displayed in the Middle School Art Exhibition.DSC06496

Family Feast

During the first semester this year a class of year 7 students embarked on creating their own illustrated cookbook inspired by a number of professional illustrators they researched. They were given the task of collecting recipes that are commonly used in their own home and creating drawings to represent them. Each week they were introduced to alternative drawing processes and were encouraged to ‘play’ with these skills to express their ideas. The results were stunning and all so authentic. These drawings were then showcased as a professionally printed cookbook as a way to celebrate and make permanent the endeavors of our students. This hardcover book was made especially for the students in the class and copies of it are in the middle school library.

It is such a special moment to see the work of our students remembered in such permanent way in our school.

Ndebele Hanging Pots

Last term a group of year 7 students learnt about the traditional pattern making of the Ndebele people. They used this as inspiration for their own work and created Sgraffito carved ceramic hanging pots. They each approached the carving and creating of these pots in such unique ways, some created very geometric patterns while others made individual patterns in sections. These pots are on display in the Fra Angelico courtyard, there will soon be additional miniature versions included as well.

Hungry Ghost Festival Lanterns

Last semester a group of year 7 students explored printmaking and sculpture following the theme of ‘the hungry ghost festival’ celebrated in many Asian countries. They each created foam prints for someone that has passed away in their life and printed these onto Joss paper. They covered cane lanterns they constructed with the printed Joss paper as a symbolic representation of the festival.

Imants Tillers

Year 7 students in term 1 created a collaborative painting based on the one of South Australia’s ‘outback’, the Flinders Ranges. Students researched Imants Tillers and Albert Namatjira as inspiration for their watercolour paintings. They also layered words from Indigenous stories researched to create the context of ‘damaged histories’ in connection to Tillers.

Worthless to Precious

Year 7 students have been exploring the concept of construing ‘worthless’ and ‘precious’ objects. They have looked into how contemporary artists change these two notions as a way to question why some objects are more important than others. Students collected rocks from the school grounds and have been working on making these ‘precious’ using a variety of drawing methods including digital software. Students are working towards creating precious sculptures teamed with drawing representations.

Story Planes

This term a class of year 7 students have been undertaking a public art project  for the college. The aim of the ‘Story Planes’ project was to share stories between the students and the dominican sisters and their time at the college. They wrote pen-pal letters to each other, shared memories and photos. The students each painted portraits of their chosen sister and re-wrote their letters on sheet metal. These were folded and then installed on the brick wall adjacent to the new St Dominics  courtyard.

The students will soon be conducting a morning tea in 2014 with the sisters to celebrate this project and hopefully many more to come.

Embroidered Portrait

This term, a class of year 6 students have been learning about ways to embroider with specific reference to contemporary artists. They investigated and were inspired by Maurizio Anzeri, who creates very mathematical patterns of embroidery over photos of people. Students used their own portrait to embroider and some incorporated simple geometric patterns, flowers to beadwork. Students were able to apply skills that are often assumed as too difficult or beyond their generation and applied them within an artwork that was thoughtfully designed.
