Mosaic Artwork

Recently, a group of 18 students created a planned mosaic artwork as part of their Community Living Week. They learnt about tile cutting and grouting and created their own table mosaics as well. The artwork was designed to celebrate the schools move to a house-based system: Kavanagh, Boylan, Moore and Murphy, all past sisters that played a strong role in the foundation of the school. The mosaic consists of 5 parts; 4 birds each with the 2 colours of their house and a central tree that has variations of the house colours. It is wonderful to see the final installation of this artwork and the time and effort that has gone into this.

Place Banners

A group of year 7’s have recently completed a textile unit of work based on map Keys/legends of their own home surroundings. They used Google maps to locate places of interest in their own suburb and then created their own versions of symbols to identify these. The following banners are full of icons of their own suburbs and the surroundings that they are a part of.

Paired Adjectives

A class of year 6 students have recently completed their unit on sculpture. They were asked to create a wire sculpture inspired by the artist Joseph Pavel, using paired adjectives that they felt best described themselves. These sculptures are currently hung from the ceiling in the Art Centre and are each intricately created.

Year 6 Calder Circus

This term a group of year 6 students have been exploring the possibilities of moveable and interactive art with the support of their student teacher Mr Kobylecki. They were introduced to the circus sculptures created by Alexander Calder and were given the task of creating their own versions using found material and cardboard. Each student created movies of their interactive circus artworks, one of which can be watched below.

Nurture Nature

The sunflower seed explorations by the year 6 students at the Middle school Exhibition showed such different approaches to form and shape. With this unit of work they started with ink drawings of sunflower seeds and then created paper maquettes of their form and later created slab built ceramic over sized sunflower seeds.
