Kaurna Plant Totems

A group of year 6 students have undertaken a Kaurna research based art project. They responded to native South Australian plants that were used by the Kaurna people. These students created original drawings in response to these plants, which they then turned into ceramic tiles. Their artworks will be incorporated on 6 totem poles at the college and mosaic tiles will be added by Community Living Week students. Kaurna words of plant names have also been incorporated with this artwork. We have been most appreciative to be able to use these words thanks to the Kaurna Warra Pintyanthi Committee.

Here are a few images of the development of this project.

The Historic

A group of year 6 students created ceramic houses in response to historic buildings in Adelaide. They were able to ‘visit’ these buildings via google earth and create sketches of what they could see.

Home to City

the following work was created by a year 8 Art class. They explored the work by Annalise Rees and created their own hand drawn interpretations. They used Google Earth to find images of their own street and then mapped their way to the CBD. They learnt about concepts of foreground, midground and background to create the effect that their buildings were receding into the distance. This was a great task that not only integrated specific art skills but also made it possible for the students to explore the places in Adelaide with great detail.

The houses on my street

A group of year 8’s at the start of the year investigated the work by Annalise Rees and created their own abstracted house interpretation. The students used Google Earth to locate their own home and sketch the houses on their street. They learnt about negative space drawings and created a layered artwork.

Mosaic Artwork

Recently, a group of 18 students created a planned mosaic artwork as part of their Community Living Week. They learnt about tile cutting and grouting and created their own table mosaics as well. The artwork was designed to celebrate the schools move to a house-based system: Kavanagh, Boylan, Moore and Murphy, all past sisters that played a strong role in the foundation of the school. The mosaic consists of 5 parts; 4 birds each with the 2 colours of their house and a central tree that has variations of the house colours. It is wonderful to see the final installation of this artwork and the time and effort that has gone into this.
